Doctor E. R. Starr came to Rainier from Winnipeg Canada in October of 1958 and soon after took over the practice of Dr. Maurice Kenney who was, after 28 years, retiring. Kenney stayed on for awhile until Dr. Starr became acquainted with the community and work. Newspaper clippings from the November 6, 1958 issue of the Rainier (Oregon) Review.

Dr. Starr closed his practice on June 13, 1969. On July 1 of that year he began a three-year residency in Orthopedics at a St. Louis hospital. Newspaper clipping from the May 15, 1969 issue of the Rainier (Oregon) Review.

Memories of Dr. Starr, Facebook comments October 2020

Once he made a house call to us on his way home. As he was leaving he was talking and grabbed the door while not looking and stepped into the closet instead. We all laughed

His office was above the dime store. He was giving me stitches in my eye brow and I remember him saying look at the seagulls out the window. As if the that would help.

Randall Johnstun
He removed my appendix after they ruptured when I was four. Also came to the house in West Rainier when I had an asthma attack, came in and told mom to open a window, then gave me an adrenaline shot.

Leona Zimmer
I remember him. Yes he was above Rainier Variety. We went to him as kids.

Janis Allen
Wow! I remember walking up those stairs. That corner office, looking out the window, screaming my dad says, as Dr Starr cut a huge wart off the bottom of my foot. Years later, when he saw me in his other office, I was wearing pantyhose. He told me he thought those were the best thing to wear. I wore pantyhose everyday until the quarantine, and I have not been out of pjs since.

Yes remember the entire family well! Once in the middle of the night he came to our house when he lived real close to us on Laurelwood Road, and he lanced my sister Julie's eardrum when she had a bad ear infection. They had a daughter named Stephanie. I can still hear her voice. Cute little girl. We all loved sledding on their hill.

Stairs going up to Dr. Starr's office, above what is now (as of 2020) the Rainier True Value store (102 A Street West). Photo provided by Margaret Barton-Ross. Per Marjorie Clark (October 2020) Dr. Starr's office was on the second floor, left of the stairs (above the variety store). Right of the stairs was apartments. Dr. Starr moved to a new building, built in the 1960s, that was west of the building where his first office was. It had two ground floor offices, his was on the east end.
