Hop's Grocery
Roy "Hop" Elliott

Roy "Hop" Elliott standing in front of his store Hop's Grocery that was located on "B" Street (Hwy30). The photo was taken by Kingsley Foshaug sometime between 1954 and 1963.

Roy Elliott entered the grocery business in July 1954 when he purchased the Brooks Grocery Store from Ferris Brooks. The store was in the Brooks Building that was located on the north side Highway 30. The Evergreen Tavern occupied the same building to the east. Hop's Grocery was about 125 feet east of where East 1st Street and the highway intersected. Ferris Brooks had started the store 10 years earlier and was planning to retire. Brooks, in the early 1940s, owned and operated the passenger ferry Elsinore. In March 1963 Roy moved his grocery store to "A" street into what was the ILWU hiring hall. The hall was located on the north side "A" street to the east of the Rainier Bank (approximately where the public restrooms are located today). The building that he had moved from on the highway was later damaged in a fire on Sunday, April 16, 1967 and was later torn down. Roy closed his grocery store on "A" street on July 1, 1966 and opened in October Hop Elliott's Chevron Standard Station.

The Rainier Bank, the stone buiding shown in the middle of the first photo was west of the ILWU hiring hall (identified as the one with the eyebrows in the second photo).
